The û rule: building compound numbers
For any number that isn't a round ten, Kurmanji joins the ten and the unit with û (meaning "and"). So 32 is literally "thirty and two" — sî û du. The pattern never changes:
| Number | Kurdish (Kurmanji) | Audio |
|---|---|---|
| 21 | bîst û yek | |
| 22 | bîst û du | |
| 25 | bîst û pênc | |
| 32 | sî û du | — |
| 47 | çil û heft | — |
| 99 | nod û neh | — |
Hundreds & thousands
| Number | Kurdish (Kurmanji) | Audio |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | sed | |
| 200 | du sed | |
| 300 | sê sed | |
| 1,000 | hezar | |
| 2,000 | du hezar | — |
| 1,000,000 | milyon | — |
Hundreds and thousands stack the same way: 250 is du sed û pêncî ("two hundred and fifty"), 1,500 is hezar û pênc sed.
Ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd…)
To make an ordinal, Kurmanji adds the suffix -em (or -emîn) to the number.
| English | Kurdish (Kurmanji) |
|---|---|
| 1st | yekem |
| 2nd | duyem |
| 3rd | sêyem |
| 4th | çarem |
| 5th | pêncem |
